His mother prospered enormously, but after she remarried she began to lose interest in E. L. He went to live with his grandparents, the only two people he ever knew who were kind to him, and later became an itinerant farm worker.

At sixteen he joined the military, but was discharged at the end of World War I for having a "disturbing personality". After working various odd jobs for a couple of years he went back to college at age twenty-two, where he earned his first degree, an M.A. He worked as a teacher and then as an administrator of public education at several colleges before joining the faculty of Texas Southern University, eventually becoming chair of the English Department.

There he continued to teach creative writing until he retired in 1971. He also traveled extensively around the world on lecture tours, reading his poetry and prose before enthusiastic audiences in many countries. His wife taught elementary school for over forty years, and they raised five children together.
